The cast’s endearing success makes the movie likable, lighthearted fare when it shouldn’t be. The supernatural elements carry an undeniable emotional charge, but the solution to the underlying murder mystery is disappointingly tidy and trite. The movie is the next best adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, in addition to The Shawshank Redemption, and it is suspenseful and will keep you watching until the end. It makes you think about how miracles could work and how some people might deserve them. The Green Mile is a truly inspiring, touching, and sad film all in one. Tom Hanks is great in the role of Paul Edgecomb, and the rest of the cast is great with supporting roles being played by Barry Pepper, David Morse, Michael Jeter, and more. It’s hard to create magic in a prison setting, but the cast produces a memorable fairy tale that everybody can enjoy. Soon Edgecomb and two of his fellow guards notice something odd about Coffey, leading them to wonder if he could have committed the crimes with which he was charged. Paul Edgecomb is the head guard on the Green Mile, and one day a new inmate is brought into his custody: John Coffey, convicted of the murder of two young girls.ĭespite his size and the fearsome crimes he committed, Coffey seems to be a kind and well-mannered person. Based on Stephen King’s 1996 novel, the movie tells a story that happened in 1935 at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility, where Death Row is called “The Green Mile” due to the dark green linoleum that tiles the floor.
